Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, is undetectable to the natural senses without testing and can cause a hang-up during a real estate transaction. Home test kits are available through the US EPA and some home stores and although they are easy to use, they are not acceptable for real estate transactions. Only certified radon testing by a professional are accepted in most jurisdictions. Elevated radon levels in your home are easily reduced with a properly installed mitigation system done by a professional. These systems are affordable, starting at as little as $400 for a basic fan installation on an existing passive system.
In some cases it is possible to lower the radon in your home yourself without hiring a professional. Techniques such as sealing cracks and sump crock openings can close off pathways that allow soil gasses to easily enter your home. However, elevated levels pose the need for an active mitigation system and where professional consultation is recommended. The experts at Inhabit are certified to test, design and build a radon mitigation system in your home, apartment building, school or commercial building using smart diagnostics and experience with different building types. We adhere to the most recent industry-wide standards for certified radon professionals in testing and mitigation system installation in NY State and beyond. We also inspect and repair existing mitigation systems to ensure they are safely up to code, even if they were installed by other contractors.

What is Radon?
Radon is a radioactive gas released from the natural decay of the elements uranium, thorium, and radium in rocks and soil. Radioactive particles from radon and it's decay products can damage cells that line the lungs and lead to lung cancer, and in fact, long-term radon exposure is touted as the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. According to the National Cancer Institute, radon is responsible for around 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States. Testing your home is the only way to know if there is elevated radon levels. Health authorities recommend radon testing and encourage corrective action when necessary. The EPA set a national corrective action level at 4 picocuries per liter of air, or pCi/L and the WHO recommends remediation at 2.7 pCi/L.
